The School Art League honors a professional artist or an art educator at the annual ceremony at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In addition, School Specialty, Inc. collaborates with the School Art League to honor the teachers whose students won scholarships and awards by providing them with generous vouchers for art supplies for their classrooms.

The Youth Friends Award


The 2019 Youth Friends Award was given to artist Jean Shin for outstanding service to art education and inspiring young artists to recognize their creative potential. This award acknowledges the Honoree's talent, imagination, integrity, and the generosity of time given to New York City art students. Scroll down to see a list of past recipients.

Jean Shin is recognized for her monumental installations that transform everyday objects into elegant expressions of identity and community engagement. Her work has been widely exhibited in over 150 major museums and cultural institutions including at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, Museum of Fine Art Houston, and Barns Foundation. In recognition of excellence, she has received numerous awards including two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, Pollock Krasner Grant, among others. She is a tenure Professor of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.

The Charles Marshall Robertson Memorial Award


The Charles Marshall Robertson Memorial Award is presented in memory of Charles Marshall Robertson, Dean Emeritus os Pratt Institute, who served as President of The School Art League from 1965 through 1988. This award is granted to an exceptional artist who has made a significant contribution to students in New York City public schools.
